Benny Hill: Alive and Well and Living in Iraq

Chatted with my soldier on Yahoo Messenger yesterday. As usual, I asked him how things were going, and he answered, "Same as usual, just being an extra on the Benny Hill Show."

I laughed out loud.

He told me to go to youtube and search for the Benny Hill theme song to get a mental picture of what life is like for him in Iraq, serving under a bunch of alleged idiots. I told him I didn't have to, because the song was already playing in my head. Apparently he plays the theme song repeatedly for his buddies to remind them of their roles.

For those of you who don't know it, here is the new theme song for my son's battallion:

I actually like the comedy on that show most of the time.

yacky, hubby used to watch it frequently. I may have been slightly concerned that it had something to do with Benny wearing dresses, but I'm positive that wasn't the case. More likely it was the scantily clad women.

When Bill worked overseas as oilfield security (Libya, Qatar) he said many of the worst people to work with were ex-US military.
Most of those were dishonourably discharged and crazy with guns and homemade knives.
I can just imagine what your son's senior officers are like.
BTW, that theme song brought back a lot of memories. Everyone must have watched it!

Kate, I'm sure all those guys were "pogues" (persons other than grunt), as my son likes to call them.

Though I’ve never actually watched it (this is what comes of not having a TV until I was nearly 30), I’m glad that the British are able to make a material contribution to the US forces’ morale.

Tell him to read Catch-22 to bring a greater sense of reality to his perception of live int he military.

Er… ‘of life in the military.’ Sorry. It’s the drugs.

I can see it now, your son surrounded by the hustle and bustle of army life, quietly humming that tune to himself with a wry grin on his face.

Glad he is doing well!

Simon, it's a good thing the British are helping the morale of US soldiers, because the Americans aren't.

Nautilus and Lerm, thanks. Obviously I'm glad he's doing well, too.
